A Dog Story For Kids

About 100 years ago delivered a man of France was very fond of hunting. One day decided to go out and shoot birds, but he did not have a hunting dog. So we went to a dealer in dogs and bought one, dealer said it was a very good hunting dog.

Of course you know that it is the duty of a hunting dog to get out into the field ahead of his master and look for birds. When you choose one yes to point at it with his nose, so that his master may also see it. And when the bird is shot it is the work of the dog to get it and bring it to the man. But after this hunter and his dog had been in the field short time the man found that the dog would not leave his side. When he said to the dog ’seek, seek’the dog stood on his hind legs and began to dance. ‘That is very pretty,’ said the man,’but we shall not do any birds this way.’So he said again to the dog, ’seek, seek!’

This time the dog stretched himself out on the ground and played dead. ‘Come, get up!’ Said the man, but the dog did not move. Then the hunter became angry and took a stick to beat the dog. The dog saw the stick in the man’s hand he immediately jumped over. ‘Ah, I see,’ said the disappointed hunter. ‘I have bought a trick dog instead of a hunting dog. We may as well go home.’

On the way home the dog began to point, but when the man found that it was only a frog he pointed at he was disappointed. But he caught the frog, took him home and put him in a jar with some water.

Soon afterward the hunter received a visit from a friend of his who was a wise man. When this man saw the frog he said:

‘Let us make the frog useful. He will serve as a barometer to tell us whether it will rain or not. Bring me two small, flat pieces of wood, a dozen matches and two bullets.’

With that who pieces of wood four sides and the matches for rungs the wise man soon made a small ladder. To the ends he tied the bullets to keep the ladder upright against the side of the jar. Immediately the frog climbed to the top of the ladder.’Ah,’ said the wise man,’it is going to rain. You had better stay home. When the frog climbs to the top that will surely rain. When he remains at the bottom there’ll be fine whether, and if you climbs halfway up you had better carry your umbrella when you go out.’
