Dog Behavior Question, why does this Whippet keep growling and baring her teeth at me?

Lexy asked:

Last night I started sitting for a Whippet Mix, I’ll be with her till Sunday. She is a calm and sweet dog. Until she does this, growling and baring teeth thing. I never have seen or sat her until last night; her owners usual sitter canceled at last minute. I met with the owner who gave me all the basic info about her along with vices she has. What she didn’t mention is that she will suddenly show all her teeth and start growling, not softly, but very vicious sounding. She hasn’t nipped at me or god forbid bite me yet. But I am very worried about this. Maybe she does not do this with the owner but I don’t like it. Last night I was sitting on the coach with her and all the sudden she stood up, got up in my face and started the growling and teeth baring for 10 seconds. I thought for sure she was going to lunge at my throat. I don’t think she’s been trained that well, she seems to do whatever she wants. I don’t know if she will act on this or if it’s something she does. She’s not a rescue, and has never been abused, so I don’t know what brings this on. She starts growling when excited but that’s not thethreatening growl I hear the other times. She insists I pet her and if I stop she nudges me to keep doing it. So far the dog has done this five times, I’ll see the teeth coming out and then the deep growling starts, and her face resembles a wolves. She gets very aggressive sounding. Does anyone have an idea why she might be doing this? Does anyone know of other Whippets who do this, is it a Whippet thing? She’s about 75% Whippet and I think the rest is Basenji.
The owner never mentioned this at all, and last night I was on the verge of leaving. I can’t get in touch with the owner at the moment, she’s in W Virgina at some reunion. So please if anyone knows what this is, what could be causing it, or how I can correct it. Let me know. I tell her to stop, but she won’t. I get up and leave, and usually then she stops. But it’s sporadic, I don’t know where this is stemming from. Please write down your in-put, if she continues to do this I might have to quit and tell the owner I don’t feel safe with her. I don’t like feeling like I’m walking on eggshells every time I have to pet the dog. She’s great outside on walks, follows me everywhere in the house. It seems like on the couch when I’m petting her or stop petting her she does this. Thanks in advance.

What should I do to about dog barking?

localbandsarebetter asked:

Every time our we let our dog outside to go to the bathroom, he barks. Sometimes when you go to let him in, he runs away (that’s normally only when there’s snow, like today). Normally I’ll go out and play with him out back, but I can’t do it all the time, especially when it’s 9 at night.

The barking is getting annoying. I would like to find a way to get him to stop barking, or just not bark as much.

Any ideas?

What dog behavior training books do you recommend?

♥Lacie♥ asked:

So, last night I found a CL ad written by a lady trying to rehome her dog bcuz he escaped her house and chased a neighbor lady and her dog home growling and snarling.

I emailed this lady and suggested a doctors visit and some training. She has decided to keep her dog (yea) and try some training. She also mentioned that it’s really not in the budget to hire a personal behaviorist, and was planning on going to Barnes and Noble to look for some books.

Any suggestions welcome…I’d love to be able to help this woman and her dog. She is just overly concerned about aggression right now because she has a young daughter.

I’ve done my best to convince her that her dog doesn’t need to be put down or rehomed…now I’d like to be able to recommend some training tools for her to use.

THANKS!
Anthing besides Cesar Millan please!
Thanks Tony…much appreciated :)
A little background on the dog. They’ve had him for 4 years…since he was a pup. He’s an ACD/Lab mix, and has never shown any signs of aggression. They left their window open on Monday and he pushed through the screen and was barking at a neighbor walking her small dog. That’s it…the whole story.
Thanks everyone…some of these look like great books. I think I need to get a couple for myself :)
Greekman…I agree she should consult a professional, but I think that educating herself a bit on dogs and their behaviors could be helpful in the mean time. I don’t know this woman…I’m just trying to help in any way that I can. I appreciate your advice.
Thanks Shelter Puppies…I’ll pass along the link to her. :)

Dog behavior help?

talbottgirls asked:

We recently moved into the country. Our landlord lives in front of our home. Before he moved into that house, he lived in ours. He has a yellow lab.

Well, yesterday when my husband came home, he met him and wanted to come in. He stayed on our front porch for a little while and left.

At about 3:45 this morning, my oldest daughter (who had fallen asleep watching tv on the love seat) called to me that the big yellow dog was sleeping on the couch. She has a tendency to talk in her sleep, so I just thought she was dreaming. She called me and said it again. I looked and sure enough…it was him. He had gotten one of there stuffed animals and made himself at home. He was as gentle as he could be…why do you think this happened?

My landlord and his wife do not have any children and the dog LOVES to spend the time watching my kids when they come to the door. This was the most bizarre incident. We eventually lured him out with a doggie treat.
I am not complaining in the least…I just wonder why he did this. =D
BTW, we have a doggie door on our screen door. We have a gated deck. We leave the main back door ajar, because we have a small dog that needs to go relieve herself at night.

dog barking?

Written by gitterdun on May 18, 2009 – 6:10 pm -

stacey t asked:

I have three chihuahua! They are typical chihuahuas that bark! Too damn alert. Its so irratating because Lately I been having migraines. Any suggestions to help this barking problem? They bark at everything. Lil noises. Everything. Especially at the dog park. They bark at people lol
when they’re in house, i do put muzzle on sometimes. They can still bark really loud. My have one purebred chihuahua and the other two are chihuahua mix with mini pin. They bark real loud and can still howl with the muzzle on when I leave real quick! Shock collars? I’m afraid to use that on my dogs. Is it cruel? Painful? Or just a pinch feeling?
excuse me lovepink, it was a pretty common question. I never allowed them to bark, but what can I do. Of course I never really allowed it,but they do it anyways. They are chihuahuas. I always tell them “no barking” and give them a light tap if they get REAL loud like howling. It just been bugging a whole lot more because I been having a lot of problems.
hey JUJU it is easy for you to say because your dog doesn’t bark like that. I do live in a burglary prone zone. In the ghetto. Los angeles. I am awake 15 hrs a day. My dogs are just barkers and I’m just trying to once again, find another solution or something to ease the situation.
YES they encourage each other and thats hard already! They are over a year old now too
