They will Bark at the mail man and other things like that!!!!! They can get pretty large they are the SWEETEST and most loyale dog you could get!!! They are good around other dogs And GREAT with children!!!!! Warning sometimes when they need attention they may climb on top of you, asspecially when you are laying on the couch!!!! Lots of times for descriptions lots of people quote: ” He’s a lover not a fighter!!!” I definetly think this would be the PERFECT dog for you!!!!!

my favourite large dog breed is rottweiler..
i had 2 rotts,and here’s their character :
- loving
- calm
- courageous
- obedient, loyal and devoted
- protective, will defend their owner and family if needed
- very alert to small sounds and movements,a natural good guard dog
- intelligent, easy to train
- good playmate to my young cousins
- family and friends are always happily welcomed, strangers are not.

not much grooming are required compared to german shepherd.

however, they need to be trained and handled correctly,else you could end up with an over powerful dog..

german shepherd! good for gaurding, working, protecting, obediant, active, and everything else! i have a german shepherd too and he’s like awsome!

a great dane there gentle great around people and other dogs also they dont live up to rumours they dont eat heaps.TRUST ME

Ahhh, sorry about the loss of your dog.

There’s no single breed that is right for you. A GSD might be a great dog for you … but many other breeds might be very good, too.

The best thing for you to do is research EVERY breed that interests you before you decide. The truth is that MOST breeds are at least somewhat protective of their homes and families, so don’t be stuck on getting a “guardian breed” if there are others that you find will better fit your lifestyle.

Most of the Herding breeds (including the GSD, but also Collie, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, and others) are great watchdogs. Those breeds are renowned as intelligent, faithful companions as well as being protective of their homes and families.

The large “working” breeds (Doberman, Rottweiler, Great Dane, etc.) are also worth considering. They are great dogs for the right owner.

You get it. There’s a best breed (or maybe several!) for everyone but it’s up to you to carefully consider what you really want and need from your new dog. Be honest with yourself about your ability to handle a particular breed, your financial ability to feed and care for a breed (large dog = large bags of dog food … and large vet-bills!) and grooming and training requirements.

Well my favorite large breed is the rough collie. Excellent guard dogs, yet friendly with family. I had a GSD mix myself growing up and she was extremely protective, and took on a grumpy dog twice her size that came in the yard. She was brilliant, and a breeze to train occasionally she would get chasing a squirel and slip under the fence, she would walk around to the front door and lay infront of it until you let her in the house. She would let kids crawl all over her and got along with friendly dogs. They are great pets if you train them well. They are working dogs and really thrive at competative obediance. They also require a fair amount of exercise

Think about what kind of dog will suit your lifestyle, and go from there. I have a 2-year-old German shepherd whom I adore. She’s very sweet, very loving, and nicely sized for protection when I go out walking. However, like most German shepherds, she’s extremely athletic and requires a lot of exercise. She has always been a lot more wary of new things than our other dog, and is very vocal outside as well. She has a very high prey drive, and I can’t honestly say I trust her 100% around cats, small dogs, or other small creatures, which is a problem because she can move and run so much faster than I can. She takes longer to train than my other dog, as she likes to do things her way. She sheds a whole other dog in fur every week.

Obviously not all German shepherds are the same, but these are some things to consider before you look at getting one. They’re beautiful, intelligent, athletic dogs, but all of these qualities have a down side as well as an up side, and you need to be prepared for that. I love my German shepherd completely – I’m sure you’ll also find a devoted companion if you decide this is the dog for you.

Incidentally, my kelpie/labrador dog is a much more active watchdog than my German shepherd. She came from the RSPCA, and there are hundreds of other beautiful large dogs at shelters that would make excellent companions and watchdogs. Good luck with your search!

CHOCOLATE LAB. They are absolutely the best dog breed. I own one and she is sweet, playing, loves to lick :]. She is so protective of our family. She loves sitting by the door and watching outside. If a car pulls up in the drive way she will bark. Not a mean bark… just one to let us know someone is there. And I’m positive if someone harmful came to our house she would be there for us. She loves to go for walks, and play ball. (well she used to but she is 9 now). Even though she is old she is still hyper at some times, but loves to relax and lay outside with you. They are well behaved, nice, great with kids, and are just outstanding dogs. GET A CHOCOLATE LAB!

I suggest going to your local shelter and not supporting a horrible puppy mill, which is what so many breeders have become. If you really love dogs, go save one. You can get a puppy or an older dog, they even have pure bred dogs. With the economy the way it is, people are turning in family pets in record numbers. Dogs are loyal pack animals and all will be protective of their owner, no matter what size or breed. I have two mutts who are the best guard dogs and playmates.
