If you have a large dog and he is outside all of the time what is the best thing to get rid of mites in the ears and how can this be prevented in the future? It sounds irritating and unhealthy.

Your vet will give you medication for the mites. Also, why doesn’t your dog live in your house with you?

Ask a local Vet to recommend medicine.

Take your dog to the vet. They’ll treat the ear mites and probably recommend an ongoing treatment (mine are on Revolution) to keep the mites away. You especially need to consider something like that if your dog is outdoors all the time. Mine are indoor dogs, but one of them was still very susceptible to ear mites.

I work at a vet clinic and you have two options.

You can purchase a solution of oil mixed with ivomec (a form of dewormer) that needs to be applied to the ears for a few days and then repeated in three weeks. It’s inexpensive (about $5 for a bottle) – but you must remember to reapply the treatment routinely if ear mites are a problem.

Your other option is to purchase Revolution from your vet clinic. It is a solution that is applied between the shoulder blades and absorbed into the dog. It will prevent fleas, heartworm, tapeworms, and ear mites! It is applied once a month and is waterproof. The only downside is that it is pretty expensive – about $20/month and comes in packs of 3 or 6 doses. It’s very effective though and a lot less trouble.

The ear mite medicine that is applied into the ears is an over the counter medicine. The Revolution is also an OTC medicine as long as you have a negative heartworm test within the last year. I wish you the best!

Your vet can offer you the best options….how about when you get rid of them you keep him inside and give him the luxury of a warm dry home and love around the clock….dogs need to feel wanted and needed not just a protection tool….how sad

Clean the area the dog sleeps in and use Pre Srike to spray your yard. It’s available at PetSmart stores and probably other places as well.
Get a Vet prescribed medication for the ears. It will take some time for this to clear up and consistency with using the medication. Consider keeping your dog inside at night and part of the day when you are home.
Pre-strike works against fleas, ticks and other insects so it complements any preventative flea/tick meds you use.

I think Revolution gets rid of and prevents ear mites and it’s a heartworm med and prevents all kinds of mites and fleas and ticks. Google it and see.

i think revolution is good for ear mites youre dog doesn’t necessarily have to live inside, juust keep a watchful eye on his ears.
