What kind of dog food has the largest pieces?

Written by gitterdun on May 31, 2009 – 7:40 pm -

( -_- ) asked:

So our dog eats his food crazy fast. And he doesn’t like to chew it, he just swallows it. So we are looking for big pieces that he has to chew. The biggest I’ve found so far is Science Diet large breed dog food. They are sphere pieces that are maybe like 3/4 of an inch diameter. He chews maybe half and swallows the rest. It’s definitely better than before, but still not great. Is there a dog food that has really big pieces so dogs have to chew it? Thanks.

Dog Behavior Question, why does this Whippet keep growling and baring her teeth at me?

Written by gitterdun on May 28, 2009 – 5:25 pm -

Lexy asked:

Last night I started sitting for a Whippet Mix, I’ll be with her till Sunday. She is a calm and sweet dog. Until she does this, growling and baring teeth thing. I never have seen or sat her until last night; her owners usual sitter canceled at last minute. I met with the owner who gave me all the basic info about her along with vices she has. What she didn’t mention is that she will suddenly show all her teeth and start growling, not softly, but very vicious sounding. She hasn’t nipped at me or god forbid bite me yet. But I am very worried about this. Maybe she does not do this with the owner but I don’t like it. Last night I was sitting on the coach with her and all the sudden she stood up, got up in my face and started the growling and teeth baring for 10 seconds. I thought for sure she was going to lunge at my throat. I don’t think she’s been trained that well, she seems to do whatever she wants. I don’t know if she will act on this or if it’s something she does. She’s not a rescue, and has never been abused, so I don’t know what brings this on. She starts growling when excited but that’s not thethreatening growl I hear the other times. She insists I pet her and if I stop she nudges me to keep doing it. So far the dog has done this five times, I’ll see the teeth coming out and then the deep growling starts, and her face resembles a wolves. She gets very aggressive sounding. Does anyone have an idea why she might be doing this? Does anyone know of other Whippets who do this, is it a Whippet thing? She’s about 75% Whippet and I think the rest is Basenji.
The owner never mentioned this at all, and last night I was on the verge of leaving. I can’t get in touch with the owner at the moment, she’s in W Virgina at some reunion. So please if anyone knows what this is, what could be causing it, or how I can correct it. Let me know. I tell her to stop, but she won’t. I get up and leave, and usually then she stops. But it’s sporadic, I don’t know where this is stemming from. Please write down your in-put, if she continues to do this I might have to quit and tell the owner I don’t feel safe with her. I don’t like feeling like I’m walking on eggshells every time I have to pet the dog. She’s great outside on walks, follows me everywhere in the house. It seems like on the couch when I’m petting her or stop petting her she does this. Thanks in advance.

what is the best dog training book to read for an apbt puppy?

party animal asked:

i recently ordered pit bulls for dummies, and will soon acquire a copy of dog training for dummies.

the lady that lives downstairs from me gave me a book titled ‘Smarter than you Think’ and it tells you to throw things at your dog to teach it to come, and to stick a match in its **** to poop, and not trust dog food companies, and all this weird stuff, not too sure about that book.

any other suggestions? or tips?

What should I do to about dog barking?

Written by gitterdun on May 22, 2009 – 4:03 pm -

localbandsarebetter asked:

Every time our we let our dog outside to go to the bathroom, he barks. Sometimes when you go to let him in, he runs away (that’s normally only when there’s snow, like today). Normally I’ll go out and play with him out back, but I can’t do it all the time, especially when it’s 9 at night.

The barking is getting annoying. I would like to find a way to get him to stop barking, or just not bark as much.

Any ideas?
